New communication method for bus cancellations ~ beginning Sunday, September 18.  NAFCS will be practicing the following protocols:

For bus route cancellations, NAFCS will be utilizing text and/or email to the schools impacted. We will no longer be making phone calls for bus route cancellations. We will use phone calls for emergencies, school related information, and/or weather-related events. NAFCS will continue to communicate only with custodial parents/guardians. For bus cancellations, communications will occur via text and/or email. The contacts that we are currently calling are the only phone numbers available for text messaging. If you currently have a home phone number (land line) associated with your account and would like to change it to a cell, please contact your child’s school. To be able to receive text messaging through our communication provider (School Messenger), custodial parents/guardians will need to voluntarily text “Y” to 67587. School Messenger will also be sending an introductory text to families and you can opt in from there as well.  If you do not receive a text message, please contact your child’s school to make sure that we have the appropriate phone number on file for the custodial parent/guardian. This transition plan will begin on Sunday, September 18. School Messenger is compliant with the Student Privacy PledgeTM, so you can rest assured that your information is safe and will never be given or sold to anyone.

Additionally, bus cancellations will be updated daily before 6:00 AM and 7:30 PM on our corporation website: https://www.nafcs.k12.in.us/transportation/

For emergency and weather related events (i.e. snow cancellations), NAFCS will be sending mass messaging to custodial parents and staff via: phone calls, text and email.

To reiterate, bus cancellation communication will come in three forms: text message (if you have opted in), email, and posted on our corporation website.

  • School Messenger uses phone numbers that are on custodial parent accounts in PowerSchool.  If the phone number is not in PowerSchool, it will NOT receive a call or a text.

  •  If a parent gets the email and opts in on a phone that is NOT attached to their account in PowerSchool, the parent will NOT receive a text message because we are not calling that number as it is not in PowerSchool.

Looking ahead – Wednesday, September 21st will be an Early Release Day.  Students will dismiss @ 1:45pm.  Buses will arrive home in the afternoon 2 hours earlier.  There will NOT be any practices after school that day – all students will need to go home unless they are staying for the YMCA Afterschool Care.

Students will work asynchronously from 1:45-3:45.

 

 

  • Fall Scholastic Book Fair will be the week of September 26 – 30th.  Schedule will come later.  There will be a Counselor’s Parent Night (more info will come) on Wednesday, September 28th from 6:00 – 6:45pm and then the book fair will be open to HHMS families from 6:45 – 8:00pm.

Athletics Announcements (We also have an athletic bulletin board located in the Commons near the pool)

  • On Wednesday, the boys 5/6 soccer team played a strong team game that resulted in a 6-0 win over Jeffersonville. Notable strong defensive play by Forrest Brinkworth. Balanced offense with goals by Grayson Howe, Travis Harris (2 goals), Zack Fuhrman, Jack Hornung, and Brogan Wild. Assists by Sam McAllister (2 assists) and Ryder Scarbrough. The Best Award for Man-of-the-Match went to Travis Harris for his great effort on the field!

Congratulations to the Boy’s Tennis Team for yesterday’s big win agaist Parkview! Everyone played great!

Clubs (We have a club bulletin board located in the Commons near the Cafe’)

  • The RAK Club is hosting a collection for Birthday Supplies to create Birthday care packages for families who cannot afford to have a birthday party for their kids. We will have collection boxes by the main stairwell near the elevator on each floor as well as a box in the commons by the front office. We will collect items between Monday, September 19th and Wednesday, September 28th. A list of items that we need donated are will be added to the announcements:

  • Assorted birthday decorations

  • Intramurals start this week.  Intramurals is for any student who is interested in playing different sports.

    • Our 7th and 8th graders meet on Thursday mornings from 7:30 – 8:35AM.

    • Our 5th and 6th graders meet on Friday mornings from 7:30 –  8:35AM.

    • Students can enter the gym through door 28.

    • If you have any questions, please see Ms. Fox or Mr. Michell.

    • The first semester schedule is posted on the club board.

  • Sudoku club – We are looking for students interested in joining a Sudoku club.  We will start in October and meet on Thursdays after school until 5:00.  Anyone interested should email Mrs. Jenkins (kjenkins@nafcs.org) for more information.

  • Journalism Club ~  We will meet weekly on Wednesdays in room A185 from 4-5pm.    This is open to all 5-8 grade students and we will be learning the basics of journalism while attending events, conducting interviews and taking pictures to put in the publication we will produce.     If you have any questions, please email Mrs. Taggart at staggart@nafcs.org.

 

  • Chess club ~ will meet on Tuesdays after school until 5:00.  We will meet in Mrs. Schroeder’s room (A244).  No experience required.  See Mrs. Milliner amilliner@nafcs.org or Mrs. Schroeder jschroeder@nafcs.org if you have any questions.

  • American Sign Language (ASL) Club will continue to meet in the Safety Net Room (across from the cafe’) every other Tuesday from 8:15am.

  • The Debate Club will begin meeting after fall break.  The first meeting will be in Mrs. Stewart’s room A123 on Thursday, 10/20 from 3:45 – 4:30.  The debate club will meet bi-weekly once the first meeting has taken place.  Future dates will be posted.  Please see Mrs. Stewart if you have any questions.

 

  • Campus Life for 5-8th grades meets on every Wednesday after school until 5:00pm in the cafeteria. Campus Life is a positive place where students can have fun with friends, talk about relevant issues, and be heard without judgment.   • Fall Intersession is Oct. 3rd – 7th (Mon – Fri)

    • The hours have slightly changed in an effort to better accommodate transportation.

    • The Middle School student day is 9:00am – 12:00pm.

    • Student registration will open shortly after Labor Day

 

  • Picture retakes will be on Tuesday, October 25th in the Library

  • Car Rider Reminder – please pull you vehicle all the way up (bumper to bumper) so that we can get as many cars in as possible when loading and unloading.

  • Students, just a reminder that you should be scanning your bus pass as you get on and off of your bus.  This is helpful in an emergency situation for us to know who is on the bus.  It is NOT required to have a bus pass at this time.  Please be patient with us as we need to get passes out to our new students.  Thank you

  • If you are anticipating being out of school for more 2 or more consecutive days, stop by the office to pick up a green Absence form from Mrs. Burger.

 

 

Car Rider Pick-up and Drop Off

All car riders dropping off or picking up students will enter the Indian Creek Lane entrance (NOT our main entrance).  The front is for Buses and Staff Parking only.  Once you pass the tennis courts, you will use:

  • Morning drop-off:

  • To alleviate congestion on the main road in the morning, we will allow vehicles to use either the upper or lower car rider lines to drop off their students based on traffic flow.

  • Only 5th-grade students will be allowed to go straight to their classroom at 8:40am.

  • All 6th, 7th, & 8th-grade students using the upper car rider line will use the back stairwell with supervision to walk down to the Commons/Cafe’/Gym.  These students should NOT stop at their locker or their classrooms unsupervised.

  • Please stay in your lane and remain in that lane.  If you are in the right lane, that will be taking you up to the upper car rider line.  If you are in the left lane, that will take you to the lower car rider lane.  For safety measures, you should NOT switch lanes at the 3-way stop.

  • Don’t release students from your vehicle until 8:40am in both the upper and lower car rider lines. This is for their safety.

 

  • Afternoon pick-up:

    • The right-hand lane to enter the Upper Car Rider Circle (5th & 6th  Grade ONLY)

    • The left-hand lane to use the Lower Car Rider Circle (for vehicles that have any 7th or 8th Grade students)

  • All vehicles will NEED to stop at the 3-Way stop in the back.  (We are still waiting on the white lines to be painted)

  • Both lanes will exit using the side parking lot (orange below)

  • Cars attempting to enter the front entrance will be directed to the Indian Creek Lane for drop off.  We appreciate your cooperation.

  • If you arrive at HHMS at 9:00, you need to use the front entrance and walk your student in for a Tardy pass. (The back doors will be locked for safety reasons)
